Perhaps the most popular activity at the Chateau is relaxing by the pool. The 12 by 6 metre enclosed heated swimming pool enjoys panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
There is a separate 4 by 3 metre paddling pool for children. Both are heated by a large computer controlled array of solar panels. The main pool has a safety ledge around the deep end for those less confident in the water.
I think everyone visits one of the local markets during their stay with us. It's just so quintessentially French to visit a bustling local market, with the wonderful array of fresh local produce.
Villebois - Saturday, Aubeterre - Sunday, Chalais - Monday, Brantome - Friday, Riberac - Friday. All are morning only.
Aubeterre has a lovely river beach with grassed play area, canoe hire, cafe and restaurant.
St Aulaye the same, with the addition of water slides! Great bar / restaurant that has an excellent Moule Frite night every Sunday (booking recommended).
La Jemaye is a lovely lake with white sandy beach.
Simple leisure canoeing is really popular around about here, and it's easy to see why. It's great fun for all the family. The principal rivers in the region are all slow running, so ideal for beginners. With spectacular, tranquil views otherwise hidden.
Available for hire nearby at Brantome, Angouleme, Riberac, Aubeterre and Montbron.
You can also hire a motor boat at LE PORT D'ANGOULEME FLEAC by the hour, up to a day to cruise on the river Charente.
Just 30 mins away in Angouleme is the great water park Nautilus with 50m indoor pools, diving pools, outdoor and indoor slides, wave machines. There is large lake for fishing, sailing & watersports.
The French love to get out on their bikes, and none more so than those in our local region.
The area is littered with marked mountain bike trails for all skill levels. The roads around the village are best described as quiet county lanes.
We have 3 adult mountain bikes and a child seat for hire.
Bikes are also available for hire at the local tourist office at Villebois-Lavalette.
There are four excellent golf courses nearby.
People are always amazed by the amount of wildlife around the Chateau.
It seems that every available tree, shrub, hedge, nook and cranny has something nesting in it in the spring-time.
The Nightingales song in the early hours is just enchanting. Each evening in the summer, squadrons of fledgling swifts scream around the Chateau and church towers.
